PVC Rocket Engine

Dan has been building large rocket motors and rockets for many years and this book covers one of his most reliable large motors. This is not a scientific explanation with complicated equations and theory. This is a step-by-step explanation of how to make this large and reliable rocket motor from commonly available materials. There is nothing left to scratch your head over. It is precise and includes every last detail. Anyone with average home garage type skills should have no trouble making this motor successfully. This book uses tons of pictures in addition to the text so you can not only read how but see just how each step is done. He has now released his second edition to this book which is entitled “PVC Rocket Engine.” It is now in soft bound 6″ X 9″ format with black and white pictures and glue binding. The second edition has added a few revised techniques that make some steps easier or use better tools, etc. I have been experimenting with my own rocket engines off and on since the 1970′s so am very familiar with this subject and am pleased to offer my endorsement (for whatever it is worth) as a book I highly recommend. You should also take a look at his second book, M80 Rocket Powered Skateboard.

Guaranteed Performance

One of my friends bought this book for me after he got me started building rockets with him. After reading it from cover to cover I discovered how easy it was going to be to build my first motor. Most of the materials are available at any hardware store, and the fuel components can be found at walmart. I have built 5 of the motors described in this book, and I have scaled it down to smaller sizes. I have built a total of about 20 motors using this method. At Southern Thunder in Manchester, TN I used this same fuel in an AMW 54mm case and flew my Competitor 3 kit to 6400ft. Three other rockets were built almost entirely of PVC pipe, one with a smaller version of this motor flew to over 1900ft. I’ve watched several videos on youtube and other sites but have never found instructions as detailed as these. After nearly two years of making this propellant it is still the only method and formula I use. The author has even characterized the propellant and provided me with the data so I can use it in my Burnsim software and someday soon I plan to fly motors even larger than is described in his book. If you have a desire to build a very powerful motor without spending much money then I am sure you won’t be disappointed. Personally, I’m glad to have my copy just for the instructions on making the propellant as I no longer use PVC and now cast grains for use in aluminum cases with graphite nozzles. Cleanup is very simple with just a small amount of water!

PVC Rocket Engine is an excellent manual that guides the beginner, step by step, through construction and testing of the single use, homemade engine. At every step, safety is stressed. The book is complete in that it covers mechanical construction, fuel mixing/loading, igniter construction/placement, protection for long term storage, and testing. An all around 5 star manual for the older hobbist. For younger rocketeers adult supervision is strongly recommended.
