5Very Happy customer
By Lawrence D. Wilson
We put in an inground pool two years ago and have struggled with keeping it clear the whole time. We just opened the pool up for the year and to our dismay the pool was cloudy and had a layer of white scum on the bottom. THE AQUABOT’s instructions were very easy to understand and to follow . We did have to clean the filter frequently for the first few days but I have never seen our pool looking so clear or clean as it looks right now. We had to pour some cement close to the pool and accidentlly got some in the pool ,no problem for the aquabot. We bought another cleaner when we bought the pool and paid almost as much,I wish now we had bought the aquabot instead. As the person who is responsible for cleaning the pool,I am in Love with the Aquabot!!!!!!

5They call it “The Classic”
By Joseph S. Henry
I bought my aquabot “classic” at BJ’s Wholesale Club about 4 years ago. I was under the impression that this unit would be fool-proof, easy to use, a work horse, and cheap to operate.
Let’s start this review with how it operates first and then get into the maintenance issues towards the end of the review. They’re advertising that you simple plug it in and walk away. It cleans the whole pool, the steps, goes around obstacles such as ladders and will not get stuck. I personally found that I had to “baby” this unit. Every hour or so there seemed to be something going on. I found that it did hang on the pool ladder occasionally, so after a few times, I simply started pulling the ladder out to avoid this from happening. No big deal. In 4 years, I must say that I only saw this unit on the steps a few times, but then again, I wasn’t watching too much. If I wanted the steps cleaner, I would catch the unit and placed it there physically. Then there’s the claim that this unit will vacuum the pool in 8 hours. You will need to allow at least 12 hours for this unit to do its job, but of course, that’s simply a function of how dirty the pool is. They claim that the “brain” of this unit memorizes the shape of your pool and then proceeds to clean accordingly. I seemed to see only random directional acts, and if it was so smart, why would they make a model with a remote control? You may have to physically move the unit to change where it was cleaning. You must insure that the float is flip flopped each time you use it. You also need to insure the cord is not twisted. By flopping the float, this basically changes the direction the unit travels across the top of your pool, thus helps to insure the cord twists up differently each time you use it. You also need to pull the cord out and twist it to get out any twists in it, otherwise, you will definitely have problems and/or unclean areas to your pool, but as time progressed, I found that I rarely had cord issues once they were “broken in”. On a positive note, this unit does clean awesomely. My pool never looked cleaner. It was a heck of a lot better than vacuuming by hand. It also has it’s own bag so all the debris and sand stay out of your filter saving you $$$. You also don’t need to have a separate pump to run it. Those are three big plus’s for the unit.
Then came the second year. Wouldn’t climb the walls as good as it used to, the bag had to be emptied more frequently. It is most definitely true that the small yellow drive bands wear out once a year. I have a salt system in the pool and keep my CL at a constant level. For someone that uses this unit once a week for 4 months out of the year, I don’t understand this on the part of the manufacturer. And they are just under 30 bucks with shipping. Takes about 30 minutes max to replace at most for the normal DIY. It ran great for the second year once this was done. The third year the tracks became stretched beyond OEM tolerances as these also drive the unit. (You basically have two bands and the two blue tracks driving the unit). These are 25.00 each, so add in another 50 bucks. The bag has an elastic draw around the top. This stretches and fails after a few seasons. The replacement cost of this piece of cloth is $49.00. Then the brushes stopped climbing and had to be replaced. ($80.00) They also changed the design. The “new and improved” ones catch slightly on the housing as their diameter is larger than the original brushes. Then the drive bands had to be replaced again. Then the unit stopped going straight. It was determined I needed to replace several bushings, rollers and side plates. But I still liked the unit.
Now here I am in the 4th year. My “classic” has not been in the pool since June. The drive motor is shot. The replacement cost of that unit is right at $300.00. Sure, I could replace it, but then what next. The fact of the matter is, if you go to a parts website and add up the replacement costs for all the components, you would have to pay close to twice the cost of this unit brand new. I guess that’s pretty standard, but for the money this unit costs and the little use it gets compared to say a polaris, it’s disturbing. It would seem to me that if Aquabot really wanted to maintain a customer base, then they would lower the replacement parts cost or lengthen their warranty period for something that requires yearly maintenance, IMHO.

So now I question if I should just buy another unit since I can then cannibalize the old unit as I need to, or switch up and get something else? I’m probably going to buy a new aquabot. Too bad they’re warranty is only good for a year. But if you go to a pool/spa dealer, and look in the repairs/parts section, you always see several of their competitors Polaris units and I don’t have a separate pump to run a polaris anyway. If 900 bucks is not too much for you to spend to keep your pool sparkling clear, then buy this unit w/o hesitation, b/c it does do a fantastic job. Just don’t be fooled into thinking this unit is going to make your pool life a lot easier, b/c it’s not something that you can drop in the pool and come back to 8 hours later an wahlah, your pool is spotless.. you have to work it, check on it every so often, and maintain it. I hope this helps.

UPDATE 19MAR11
I was able to contact Aqua Products Directly to discuss my drive motor. (I had never spoken to them, but had been buying parts from an on-line distributor.) I have to say I was very impressed. They were very helpful and they actually had me on speaker phone with several different technicians/engineers and I think, one of the owners. They asked me to email them pictures to better see what the potential problems were or were not and I was happy to do so. Bear in mind that this was at 4:15 on a Friday afternoon. I was impressed with their work ethic, and 5 minutes later I received a call back. Yes, it was determined that a gear in the drive motor had probably failed. While the replacement cost for a new drive motor was $280.00 plus shipping, the GREAT NEWS is that they have a trade in program. For $600.00 I am able to get a brand new unit fully warranted!! Not only that, they told me to cannibalize all the parts off the old one only having to send back the white shell with the drive and pump motors. So I was able to pull off the drive belts, scrubbers, side bars, tracks, all the track pulleys, screws, etc. I even get to keep the transformer box as a spare. The money I had previously spent was not tossed down the drain! This folks is fantastic. Just name a place where you can trade in a car, and strip it bare just turning in the body and motor?? Now I have every replacement part that you can imagine. The only thing I foresee having to purchase is extra drive belts. These should be changed yearly to keep the unit in top running condition, and after expressing my thoughts on the “engineering” of these belts, I found out that if they were made any stronger, the load on the drive motor is too much, which now makes perfect sense to me. And if you have a phillips screwdriver, its really quite simple to do, plus they send you diagrammed instructions to do so. I highly recommend this unit. Sure, it does require some maintenance, but what doesn’t?

2Works fine when it’s not broken
By riverlass
We’ve owned this machine since May 2007. It has been sitting in our garage for a year, since the repairs needed (electrical cord, electrical supply box, filter bag, etc.) would cost over $600 including shipping (to New Jersey from Texas). During the first two years the brush, drive track and drive belts have had to be replaced at least once if not more. The filter bag tore apart last year as well. It worked beautifully the first year and pretty well the second, but replacing the belts, track and brush was somewhat difficult. Also, I do not know if this is typical for robotic pool cleaners, but after being in the pool and filled with water, it was pretty heavy and somewhat difficult for me to lift out of the pool. I cannot recommend this machine due to the high repair costs.
